Three Refuges Ceremony on Winter Solstice
Three Refuges Ceremony on Winter Solstice
We will conduct our annual remote Three Refuges Ceremony (sānguī yí 三皈儀) on Winter Solstice (12/21/24). This is an opportunity for individuals to make a more formal commitment to following a Daoist path. While Daoism is not a “membership religion” and does not require formal conversion, communal rites like publically taking refuge in the external Three Treasures (Dao, scriptures, teachers) helps to establish and settle belonging, connection, commitment, and the like. This may be thought of as an initial step to or confirmation of formal Daoist adherence.
For this meeting, we will begin with a discussion of the ceremony and the external Three Treasures, then provide instructions on the performance and conduct the ceremony itself, and conclude with additional suggestions for following a committed Daoist lifeway. We will offer this at 8am CST and 6pm CST in order to include as many people as possible.
This offering is open to anyone and does not require formal association with the Daoist Foundation. All are welcome.
Please note that you will need three mats or blankets and ideally three cushions or blocks for bowing. There will be alternative instructions for individuals with mobility issues.
